Width × length, as each maker lists them. The Sealy column is the size Sealy lists for its Posturepedic Spring, Naturals Hybrid and Cocoon lines; Sealy lists its Posturepedic Hybrid and FlexGrid lines another 1/2 in shorter (38×74 in for a Twin). Mattress thickness varies by model and is not part of these sizes.
What the numbers mean
Twin and Twin XL share the same width. The only difference is 5 in (127 mm) of extra length in the XL.
Full adds 16 in (406 mm) of width over Twin at the same 75 in length. Queen is 6 in wider and 5 in longer than Full.
King and Cal King have nearly the same area — King is 6,080 in², Cal King is 6,048 in², a difference of 32 in² (0.5%). The shape is what differs: King is 4 in (102 mm) wider and 4 in (102 mm) shorter than Cal King.
Published sizes run slightly under the nominal ones. Sealy and Serta list lengths 1/2 in shorter (74.5, 79.5 and 83.5 in), and all three makers list the Full at 53 in wide instead of 54 in. A frame or fitted sheet sized to the nominal figure has that much slack.
