Linear inches = length + width + height of the bag at its outermost points, including wheels, handles and any packed pockets. Centimeter equivalents converted at 1 in = 2.54 cm and rounded to the nearest whole centimeter. "Weight per bag" is the standard limit for economy class; premium-cabin passengers may have a higher allowance at some airlines. Bags that exceed these limits incur oversize or overweight fees (or may be refused); see each airline's policy page for current fee schedules. Policies change — verify with your airline before travel.

What the numbers mean

Eight of the nine airlines cap checked bags at 62 linear inches (157 cm) — the sum of length + width + height measured at the widest points. A bag measuring 30×20×12 in totals exactly 62 in. A bag measuring 28×20×14 in also totals 62 in. The limit sets a maximum total size, not a maximum on any single dimension.

Allegiant is the exception: its 80 linear inch limit (203 cm) is substantially larger. A bag measuring 30×26×24 in totals 80 in and would exceed every other airline's limit by 18 in, while fitting within Allegiant's.

On weight, seven airlines share a 50 lb (23 kg) limit per bag. Frontier's limit is 40 lb (18.1 kg), which is 10 lb less than the others. A bag that passes the weight check at Delta, United, American, Southwest, JetBlue, Alaska or Hawaiian can still be overweight at Frontier. JetBlue states its limit as 50 lb (22.68 kg) — the slight difference from 23 kg is because 50 lb converts to 22.68 kg exactly; the other airlines round to 23 kg.

Checked bag limits are much larger than carry-on limits. The most common carry-on limit, 22×14×9 in, totals 45 linear inches — 17 in less than the 62 in checked bag limit. The roomier carry-on limit used by Southwest and Frontier (24×16×10 in) totals 50 linear inches, still 12 in under the checked bag standard.

FAQ

What is the standard checked bag size limit for US airlines?

Eight of the nine airlines on this page publish a 62 linear inch (157 cm) limit — the sum of length + width + height — for standard checked bags. The exception is Allegiant, which allows up to 80 linear inches (203 cm). Frontier uses the same 62 linear inch size limit as the others but has the lowest weight limit: 40 lb (18.1 kg) instead of the 50 lb (23 kg) standard. Policies change, so verify with your airline before travel.

What does 62 linear inches mean for a checked bag?

62 linear inches means the sum of a bag's three outer dimensions — length + width + height — must not exceed 62 in (157 cm). A typical large checked bag measuring 30×20×12 in totals 62 in. Wheels, handles and any packed pockets count in the measurement.

Which US airlines have the strictest checked bag weight limit?

Frontier has the lowest standard weight limit: 40 lb (18.1 kg) per checked bag. The other eight airlines — Delta, United, American, Southwest, JetBlue, Alaska, Hawaiian and Allegiant — all allow 50 lb (23 kg) per bag.

How do checked bag limits compare to carry-on limits?

Checked bag limits are much larger. The 62 linear inch checked bag limit allows bags such as 30×20×12 in, compared to carry-on limits of 22×14×9 in (45 linear inches, six airlines) or 24×16×10 in (50 linear inches, Southwest and Frontier). Checked bags also weigh more: up to 50 lb versus no stated weight limit at most airlines for carry-ons.
